Installing new siding over old siding is no different than wearing new clothes over your old clothes and hoping that you look good. The damage that the old siding will cause to your interior wall will be unimaginable. A major disadvantage of going in for this approach is that you do not get the opportunity to repair the insulation of your house. The siding is often installed to provide a gap between the outer wall where insulation can be pumped in.
The siding and the outer wall forms a gap which houses the insulation. If you do not remove the old siding, you would not be in a position to find out whether the installation is working properly or not. More often than not, insulation settles down and ends up creating air pockets which allow the energy efficiency of the house to come down drastically.
Some people install siding themselves, however, you need to be prepared and in most cases, it is more work than planned. Replacing the siding on your home is not a simple process. It typically involves the complete removal of the existing siding, the installation of a moisture barrier and reflashing of all windows and doors before the new siding is installed. There are also some specific handling and installation techniques and tools required. For all these reasons, a siding project is typically not a do-it-yourself type of project – it should be reserved for siding contractors that are experienced in siding installation with the proper tools.
