On average, hail only has to be about one inch in diameter to cause roof damage.
That’s only about the size of a quarter!
If there is strong wind associated with the storm, it can be smaller and still do damage.
According to the NOAA, hail that is one inch in diameter falls at about 20 mph and larger pieces can reach upwards of 100 mph. Imagine the kind of damage that can do to your roof!
Hailstorms can cause significant damage to your roof and home. Just because it was “small” hail doesn’t mean there isn’t damage. Homeowners should always get a professional roof inspection after a hailstorm to ensure their roof is safe. Otherwise, you could be footing the bill for repairs later.
Dealing with the aftermath of a hailstorm can be frustrating, so here are a couple of tips on what you should do immediately following one.
1. Safety First!
After the storm has passed and it is safe to go outside, walk the perimeter of your property and check for signs of damage. Look for…
- Broken/cracked windows
- Dings on your home’s gutters and siding
- Shingle granules / particles in your gutter downspouts
- Any other damage that could have been caused by the storm
Take photos of the damage as you go and make notes. If hail is still on the ground, take photos of that too.
We do not recommend getting on your own roof to inspect for damage. Most people don’t have the proper safety gear, ladders, or shoes. Call the professionals instead.
2. Make Reasonable Repairs, If Needed
It’s not uncommon for hail to break skylights and windows. If this happens, take photos of the damage first and then take steps to prevent more damage. This could be adding tarps or plastic around areas to keep water out.
Make sure to keep receipts for anything you purchase and take photos of the before and after in case your insurance adjuster has questions.
3. Call A Roofing Professional
Before you call your insurance company or file a claim, it can be helpful to get a professional roof inspection to know if there is damage or not. Our experts are trained to spot hail damage accurately and would not advise you to file a claim if you didn’t need it. This can save you and your insurance company time and energy, plus prevent you from filing an unneeded claim.
